The Story Behind Tarka the Otter

The novel is celebrated for its vivid descriptions of nature and its emotional depth, securing its place as a classic of British literature.

The Creation of the Statue

The idea for the Tarka the Otter Statue was conceived to honor the book’s connection to Bideford and to highlight the town’s literary and natural heritage. After a successful fundraising campaign, the statue was commissioned and sculpted by artist Rowan Fawdon. The life sized bronze otter was unveiled in 2017, becoming a popular landmark on Bideford Quay.
