St. Mary’s Church Bideford: A Historic Landmark of Faith and Heritage

St. Mary’s Church in Bideford is a historic and significant place of worship, with origins dating back to the 12th century. The original church on this site is believed to have been a modest Saxon structure before being replaced in 1259 when a new building was dedicated. For centuries, the medieval church served as an important spiritual and community center until it was deemed structurally unsound in the mid 19th century.

Reconstruction and Architectural Heritage

By the early 1860s, the decision was made to rebuild the church entirely, preserving only the 13th century tower, which still stands today. The foundation stone for the new church was laid on Easter Monday in 1863, marking the beginning of an ambitious reconstruction effort. Designed in the Gothic Revival style, the new church was completed and consecrated in 1865, featuring beautiful stonework, pointed arch windows, and intricate detailing that reflected the architectural trends of the era.

Despite its 19th century rebuild, the church still retains historical elements from its earlier incarnations. The church tower, with its distinctive battlemented parapet, houses a peal of eight bells, five of which date back to 1722, with the remaining three added in 1876. These bells continue to ring out over Bideford, marking the passage of time and maintaining a tradition that has endured for centuries.

A Church Steeped in History

St. Mary’s Church is home to several historical artifacts, reflecting the rich heritage of Bideford and its prominent families. One of its most remarkable features is the baptismal font, which dates to around 1080. Carved from a single massive piece of granite, it showcases intricate designs that suggest a blend of Saxon and Norman influences, making it one of the oldest surviving elements of the church.

Another significant historical feature is the tomb of Sir Thomas Grenville, a key figure in Bideford’s history, who died in 1513. His chest tomb, located near the altar, depicts him in full armor, reflecting his status and legacy as a member of the influential Grenville family.

A Connection to the Wider World

The church also played a role in early transatlantic encounters. In 1588, a Native American named Raleigh, who had been brought to England by the explorer Sir Richard Grenville, was baptized at St. Mary’s Church. This event was an early example of cultural exchange between England and the New World. Tragically, Raleigh died the following year and was buried in the churchyard, leaving behind a unique historical link to Bideford’s maritime past.
