Located in the heart of Ilfracombe, just steps from the seafront, Ilfracombe Museum is a treasure trove of history, natural wonders, and quirky artifacts, offering visitors a unique insight into North Devon’s rich past. Housed in a former Victorian laundry, this independent museum, founded in 1932, has been preserving and showcasing the area’s heritage for nearly a century.

A Historic Setting with an Intriguing Past

The museum building itself has an interesting history. It was originally the laundry for the Ilfracombe Hotel, one of the town’s most prestigious hotels during the Victorian era. When the hotel was demolished, the site was repurposed into what is now one of North Devon’s most fascinating museums.

The museum was founded by Mervyn G. Palmer, a keen naturalist who had previously worked for the British Museum. His passion for collecting rare specimens, local artifacts, and exotic curiosities shaped the museum’s diverse and unusual collections, making it a truly unique place to explore.
