A Secluded Beach with a Dark and Mysterious Past

Hidden beneath the cliffs on the eastern side of Ilfracombe, Rapparee Cove is a small, secluded beach steeped in maritime history, shipwrecks, and local legend. This peaceful spot, now known for its rugged beauty and tranquil waters, was once the site of one of Ilfracombe’s most tragic shipwrecks, leaving behind a tale of lost souls, treasure, and hidden secrets.

With its remote feel, dramatic cliffs, and connections to both smugglers and tragedy, Rapparee Cove is one of North Devon’s most intriguing and mysterious coastal locations.

A Cove of Shipwrecks & Lost Souls

Rapparee Cove is most famously linked to the wreck of the London, a French vessel that ran aground off the Ilfracombe coast in 1796.

The Wreck of the London  The ship was carrying French aristocrats, soldiers, prisoners, and enslaved people fleeing the French Revolution when it struck the rocks near Rapparee Cove. Many passengers drowned in the rough waters, and the tragedy left a lasting mark on local history.

💀 Discovery of Human Remains  In 1997, a storm revealed skeletal remains buried beneath the sands, believed to be those of enslaved individuals and passengers from the London. These discoveries reignited historical interest in the cove’s dark past.

💰 Legends of Lost Treasure  Some believe the London was carrying gold, meant for wealthy passengers escaping France. While artifacts have been uncovered, no great treasure has ever been officially found, leading to speculation that locals or smugglers salvaged valuable items from the wreck.

A Smuggler’s Hideout

Like much of North Devon’s coastline, Rapparee Cove was once a key location for smugglers. Its hidden location and difficult access made it ideal for illegally landing cargo, including brandy, silk, and tobacco.

🏴‍☠️ Smuggling & Secrecy  The cove’s natural cover from prying eyes made it perfect for secret trade operations.
🚣 Illicit Coastal Landings  Goods were brought ashore at night and transported inland through hidden pathways.
⚠️ Dangerous Waters  Many smugglers risked their lives navigating the sharp rocks and unpredictable tides, with some ships meeting the same fate as the London.

What to Expect When Visiting

While Rapparee Cove is not as easily accessible as other beaches, those who make the effort are rewarded with a peaceful, secluded coastal spot with an air of mystery.

🌊 A Hidden & Quiet Retreat  Unlike Ilfracombe’s main beaches, Rapparee Cove remains largely undisturbed, offering a sense of solitude.
🏖 A Mix of Sand & Shingle  Depending on the tide, small patches of sand can be found alongside pebbles and rocky outcrops.
🚶 Coastal Walks & Views  The surrounding cliffs offer breathtaking coastal views, and the cove can be reached via a steep footpath from Ilfracombe Harbour.

Wildlife at Rapparee Cove

Due to its secluded nature, Rapparee Cove is a haven for marine life and coastal birds.

🦅 Seabirds & Birds of Prey  Watch for peregrine falcons, oystercatchers, and gulls circling the cliffs.
🦭 Grey Seals  Occasionally seen resting on the rocks or swimming near the shore.
🐟 Rock Pools & Marine Creatures  The tide pools hold crabs, starfish, and anemones, perfect for nature lovers to explore.
🌿 Coastal Vegetation  The cliffs are lined with wildflowers and hardy coastal plants, providing a habitat for butterflies and insects.
