Map Location

Instow Signal Box, located near the charming village of Instow in North Devon, is a fascinating relic of the area’s railway heritage. This Grade II listed structure dates back to 1861 and was built as part of the Bideford Extension Railway. It originally served as a key point for controlling train signals and the operation of a level crossing at Instow Station. Today, it stands as a preserved historical attraction, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich railway past.

History and Significance

The signal box was a crucial part of the London and South Western Railway network, managing rail traffic along the Barnstaple to Bideford line. It continued to operate until 1979, when the line closed to passenger services. Despite its closure, the signal box has been preserved almost exactly as it was on its last day of operation. Visitors can see many of the original features, including the lever frame used to control signals and the level crossing gate wheel  .

Today, the signal box is part of the Bideford Railway Heritage Centre, and it is occasionally open to the public during certain weekends and special events. Even when closed, it remains a point of interest for those walking or cycling along the popular Tarka Trail, which follows the old railway route .
